Coming up fast- CLEMENTE FEST!

The second annual Clemente Fest on May 14 from 2 - 6pm will feature a fun, FREE celebration of the park open to the entire community. Bring a blanket to sit on and enjoy live music and performances, yoga and bellydance demonstrations, a handball tournament, activities for kids and a great raffle (prizes from La Colombe Coffee, Wake Up Yoga, WellPoint Massage, Fairmount Bicycles and more)--all to raise awareness of the ongoing efforts to revitalize the park. Clemente Playground Plans

It's been a while since we've shown it--- but since the playground renewal is in progress, here is the rendering of the completed, lovely Roberto Clemente Park and Playground:

Aside from the moon bounce, all of the amazing musicians that will be performing; Kaligata, Bomple, Magic Message, Gregory Morgan, etc., news just broke that Cobre Restaurant (812 N Broad St, Philadelphia 19130: (215) 235-1881) will be sponsoring a HANDBALL TOURNAMENT!! Clemente Volunteers win Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Award

Sara Hirschler and Laila Reilly were selected to win a Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Award for their efforts with Clemente Park and Playground over the last few years.

Next Meeting: January 31st

MEETING: The Friends of Clemente will be meeting on Monday, January 31st at 6:30 PM at the Rec Center at 18th and Wallace to talk about spring (yes, it's on it's way!) at Clemente Park & Playground. This meeting will cover volunteer opportunities and also invite everyone to brainstorm ideas for programs, initiatives and events for Clemente for the upcoming season. Please come out--you'l be sure to meet some neighbors!

IMPORTANT MEETING ON WEDNESDAY 10/27 REGARDING CLEMENTE PLAYGROUND

On Wednesday 10/27, Councilman Clarke will be presenting and speaking about the new plans for Clemente Park and Playground.

The meeting will be held at St. Andrew's Church on 19th and Wallace and will begin at 6:30 PM.

Please attend--the more people who attend, the more the Councilman will realize that this is a piece of land and a promise he made that MATTERS TO THE COMMUNITY!

It was a beautiful day!

Clemente Fest!!!

This Saturday from 11 AM - 4 PM!

There will be music from Dante Bucci, Kaligata, Gregory Morgan and DJ Jeffrey!

Puerto Rican bomba and plena music group Bomplé will be joining us as well at 12:30 in addition to Hula Hoop performer Miya Benindente!

Come out come out wherever you are--it's going to be so much fun!

There will also be a moon bounce and a relay race for kids.

Clean Up Part 2

There will be another Clean Up at Clemente Park & Playground on May 8th, Saturday from 9 AM - 1 PM!!!

This is the perfect time for another clean up because our big event the Clemente Fest is one week later on May 15th!

We'll be finishing up fence painting and making sure the place is sparkling clean!

Clemente Meeting Updates!

We had a great meeting last night and made a lot of progress on planning for this upcoming season of fun and clean-ups.

Here are some important dates you should jot down on your calendar and pass along to friends! Please join us at our next meeting (2/22 at 6:30 PM) to hear more and get involved!

-Monday 3/1: 6:30 PM: Our next Clemente meeting for more organizing, brainstorming and project involvement--held at 1800 Wallace (rec center)

-Wednesday 3/31: 6:30 PM: Our FIRST KICKBALL GAME OF THE SEASON!

-Saturday, 4/10: 10 AM - 1 PM CLEAN UP CLEMENTE DAY (in conjunction with the Mayor's City-Wide Cleanup)
-Saturday, 5/15: 11 AM - 4 PM: CLEMENTE CELEBRATION--a "bring your own grill" day of fun, games, music, moon bounces, etc....

-Friday 6/11: 8 PM: Movie Night!

Also, Saturday Tutoring is currently on hold---will keep you posted with details as soon as I hear them.

Green Street Lot Conversion!

There is currently a vacant lot on Green Street between 18th and 19th Street that is part of Laura Wheeler Waring School. It is not very pretty.

We are applying for a grant through the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society to remove the concrete and convert the land into green space!!! E-mail Fairmountisfun@gmail.com if you are interested in helping!

kickball and your chance to VOLUNTEER

The next kickball game will be Wednesday, August 26th at 6:30 PM at Clemente Park!

If you have any kind of skill (from coloring within lines to bow-hunting skills) and would like to share it with some kids in the community in the form of an after school program, PLEASE let me know! Terrance, who is the Rec Leader at Clemente is trying to get some people who are able to help with the after school program! Clemente Park & Playground Updates

Hello!  A big thanks to Trista, Chalo, Kim, Terrance, Davis and Sean for coming out to the meeting today! 

Items of note:

1) Kim and I will be meeting with the Department of Public Property which had a hand in drawing up the plans for the revitalized Clemente Playground (ground to break Fall '09) on Thursday to ask some questions and get some clarity on the following:

-trees; are any of the trees currently in the park going to be preserved? it is hard to tell from the plan

-Will the fence that surrounds the park be replaced?  If not, more painting days will be organized to ensure it is completely black by the end of the summer!

-To what extent will there be new signage for the park?

- Will the plan account for Doggie Pick-up bag dispensers and recycling bins?

- Will there be gates or gaps in the fence?

-Is there any plan to possibly include community bulletin boards?

-Is it possible to discuss the vacant concrete lot adjacent to Waring School and possibly converting what is now concrete into a garden for Waring students?

2) Movie nights

-Trista will be gathering information from resources around the city about organizing three movie nights throughout the summer in June, July and August.

-Popcorn and hotdogs will be in full effect!

3) Terrance spoke to the Police about installing a barricade for Mt. Vernon Street between 19th and 18th.  He will follow up and find out when we can expect this to be installed.

4) Picnic in Clemente Day idea proposed--will hopefully happen mid-summer- as it is a relatively self-sufficient event whereby families and individuals set up their own picnic in the park.  Our group will pull together the live musical entertainment that will happen.

5)  Weekly volunteer-led instructional activity idea was discussed.  The idea is to pull from our networks--any individuals (this includes all of you!) with any kind of talent or special skill to share; whether it's salsa dancing or yoga, scrap booking or basic personal finance, once a week we are going to try to schedule a series of free instructional/fun community events to take place at the rec center!  Anybody interested in sharing a skill for ONE NIGHT this summer with children or adults, please let us know!!!

Next kickball game will be Thursday, June 4th at 7 PM.  Next meeting for Friends of Clemente will be announced soon!

Updates!

We discussed a few things in the meeting last night.

1)  Fence Painting Completion

-waiting to hear back on whether the city has plans to replace the entire fence as a part of the   improvevment plan slated to start in the fall

-if the city will not replace the fence, we will schedule subsequent painting days

2) Movie Nights

-planning for 3 movie nights to happen on the 3rd friday in June, July and August

-Movies will be screened out doors at sundown and will be family friendly

-We are trying to figure out where to get a screen from - someone in the group has access to a projector!

3) End of Summer Celebration

-We discussed organizing a big summer festival in the park and many of the group members would rather have this kick off coincide with "back to school" to allow us to have more planning time

4) Better Communication Tools

-possibly starting a physical newsletter for us to communicate with the entire neighborhood- costs could be covered by strategic partnershis with local business

5) Summer programs and mentorship opportunities
